Dear Friends,
I am writing this letter on a cold December afternoon with rain falling mixed with icy particles.
We have just had our St Andrew’s Ball- a very happy evening attended by the Lord Mayor and the Master Cutler, both ladies this year. Our 16 year old piper Sam Johnston did us proud. Angus Middleton gave an amusing and interesting talk for his toast to Scotland – no notes! The haggis was addressed in dramatic style by Lynda Wildgoose. An enjoyable evening of dancing was had by all.
The following Sunday an augmented choir sang The John Rutter hymn “ For the Beauty of the Earth” at the Caledonian service .After the service an excellent meal was provided by Tom Delaney of the University Arms pub for over 50 people, masterminded by Margaret Fall and helpers. A cheque for £1100, half the proceeds of our Charities Day, was presented to a representative of the Bluebell Wood Hospice.
The Arts Group had an interesting talk by Margaret Fall about the Silver Darlings ( herrings). The old film she showed at the end illustrated all the facts she had given us and it was fun to try and recognize pictures of harbours in days gone by.
We have just had a fun ride on the Santa Special from Darley Dale especially enjoyed by Lily, Connor and Alex - Caledonian grandchildren who were joined by some friends from St Andrew’s.
Our next event is the Open House on New Year’s Day at 21, Harley Rd. The Arts Group has its party at Holy Trinity and all members are encouraged to come whether regular attenders of the Group or not. Details of these events are in this booklet.
The Burns Supper at St Andrew’s Church is our next big event and we encourage as many of you as possible to come as we try make a less expensive “in house” event. We have some good entertainment lined up and our friend and Past President, Brian Ogilvie, is coming from Scotland to toast the immortal memory – weather permitting!
In February we have Callys at the Ritz - an afternoon tea Arlene style with china cups, embroidered table cloths etc. Ladies wear a hat if you feel inclined. There will be glamorous mannequins on parade showing some hats.
Martin and myself wish you all a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.
Sheila and Martin
